In turning over my leaf, I will contribute a story:
Once upon a time, a dumbass kid fresh outa college thinking he knew everything got a cube-monkey job in the operations area of medium-sized financial institution. There he had an office-style job, where he made it his goal to make sure his responsibilities stayed to the point where he only had to do about 15 mins of actual work in a day...the rest was spent on figuring out just what the fuck a dollar was, and the mechanics of how I was actually moving them around and transforming them into strange new magical things called "securities".
Prior to that most of online activity was in the form of gaming. Specifically XBOX and online poker. I had just read a list of horrific sex acts as described in a comedic piece in Hustler that included terms like "Dirty Sanchez" (still my fantasy football team's name) "Hot Carl" (a nickname for a good friend), "Dutch Oven", Portugese Breakfast...all kinds of sick shit I found amusing when I was young(er) and dumb(er)...and since "donkey" is the term players use for those who suck at poker, my handle for EVERYTHING was d0nkypunch1 (cuz the real deal was always taken ).
I entered the business in aught-one (or maybe the year before), only about a year or so in to EVERYONE having a computer. I'm old enough to have worked people who remember sharing a single "terminal" for an entire area, where business transactions were done writing letters and balancing accounts using paper and adding machines. Internet usage was just becoming commonplace in my college days, when I was in high school we would have to go the university or some super-dork's house to dial-up aol...
So my research of the REAL world of economics and finance is inevitably tied to US National politics, which I was extremely interested in as I was deluded into believing Dubya was gonna take away my abortions rights...so I guess that puts the dates to '00, but I digress. I was real into left wing (liberal back then, the term "progressive" was evolving) politics (which to me meant studying the "enemy" as well, I was probably more well-versed in right/conservative) and absolutely IN LOVE with televised national politics. Watched the shit out of CSPAN, read bills, never missed an Executive Branch press event, especially after 911...which had me creeping into "scary" sites like Al Jazeera (which I swore before I looked was a terrorist hangout that would put me on a list and took a long time to ever even click on as I figured it would trigger at least red flags if not actual viruses in the bank's network).
Anywho...I kept the donkypunch1 handle at the zero hedges (economic blogs) and eschatons (left wing blogs) and LATOCs (peak oil forum, that's where the "conspiracy" side of 911 lead me) and anywhere else I had to login in this new-to-me world, since I was pretty much always pissed at what the Democrats (symbolized here in the States by a donkey) were (not) doing...and I was a punk asshole that liked to irritate and offend.
As I grew up...and recognized I lost a respect for a really awesome poster due to their handle...I abbreviated so as not to offend. I just adopted "donk" as my name already, it fit perfectly in the new "magical" arena I was entering with the Project, as I was donking around like a newb (often called a "donk") at a poker table amongst all the wizards and aliens and well-versed new agers and old timers. And now that I'm not exactly a newbie anymore, but because the dozen or so folks that pay attention to me know me as that, I'm keeping it in the "alternative world".
I changed it to Phil, my given name...thanks to the local baseball team winning the Pennant around the day I was born in September of 1977, otherwise I'd be Mike Jr....at Earth Empaths because at that time I had no intention of "opening up" about my personal life here, I intended (and still might) to do so there, as I respected how (my friend) Christine is attempting to create an alternative to the alternative in her creation, it was my way of personally (and helping her) be the change I want to see.
This forum actually was in part intended (not nearly as much as my blog, but still) to draw the dramatic and problematic forum loops away from there, as the discussion is going to be tainted with a outsider perspective of bias no matter how "objective" or open she tries to be. I felt she has a lot to disclose thanks to the position she was in, and a place for more objective (though obviously tainted by my own personal biases...but I try) discussion.
I don't really have an interest in contributing to other places any more, so Phil hangs out there trying to help the EE's keep it different than the same old shit as best we can, donk lives here, and for the moment anyway...we just lurk elsewhere.
